A Guide To Window Films

Blog

If you have old windows, you're probably sick of feeling cold drafts as you walk by them during the winter. Similarly, during the summer, heat can radiate through windows, even when they are closed. The materials that make up your windows, from the panes to the sashes, are bound to wear down and become less efficient over time.

While window replacement is a great way to dramatically increase the efficiency of your property, most people can't afford such a drastic and expensive home upgrade. If you're just looking for a simple way to make your windows a little more energy efficient, you should consider investing in window film. This article explains how window films work, and how they can be easily applied to just about any glass pane.

Tinted and Non-Tinted Films

The great thing about window films that there are tinted and non-tinted films for different needs. You don't need tinted films in every window. Even though tinted films are the best for blocking out sunlight and reducing heat transfer, they might be unnecessary in rooms that don't receive direct sunlight. At the same time, many homeowners don't like that they block out light and make the room darker. Even a clear film is going to contribute to the installation of your glass. There are exterior and interior films that can make any window more efficient.

Using Film Kits

The great thing about window films is that they are so affordable and easy to apply. In fact, most window films come with kits that include all the tools you need to apply them. Window film application kits will come with the actual window film, a liquid adhesive solution, a plastic squeegee, and a template. You will need to supply your own razor blade that you can use to cut the film. The actual application process is very simple.

Applying the Film

First, you need to clean your windows as well as possible. When they are dry, apply the adhesive directly to the glass. Roll the film onto the glass and use the squeegee to push out any bubbles. Once you get the film tight in the corners, you can cut it away easily with the razor blade right along the window sash. Then, go back over the edges of the squeegee to make sure they stay down.

This is one of the cheapest and easiest ways to reduce heat transfer and improve the overall insulation of your window fixtures. Contact a company, like JFK Window & Door Co, for more help.

Start Spring Cleaning Early

Every year, I make a list of spring cleaning tasks. Unfortunately, I’m a procrastinator. Therefore, I rarely complete every item on my extensive list. This year, I plan to start my spring cleaning early. One of the tasks I’m passionate about is cleaning windows. When I get finished with my windows, I want them to appear invisible due to their level of cleanness. To accomplish this task, I use both over-the-counter window cleaners and natural cleaning agents. To reduce the incidence of smudges, you can wipe your windows down with a newspaper. On this blog, you will learn how to clean your windows before spring arrives.
